The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, is set to visit China from May 24 to 29, during which he is expected to meet with President Xi Jinping to discuss and finalize several significant trade deals. The visit, announced by the Chinese foreign ministry, may pave the way for the formalization of a $6 billion infrastructure-for-minerals deal with Chinese investors.

As the world’s largest producer of cobalt, a crucial material for batteries, the DRC holds substantial reserves of diamonds, gold, lithium, and tantalum. President Tshisekedi, following a cabinet meeting on May 19, directed his government to proceed with negotiations on the deal after consolidating positions with stakeholders. A task force, having submitted its conclusions, will initiate discussions with Chinese partners in the coming days.

During the visit to China, the two heads of state are expected to engage in talks and participate in a signing ceremony for various cooperation documents. Highlighting the historical friendship between China and the DRC, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized the continuous deepening of political mutual trust and fruitful practical cooperation in recent years.

President Tshisekedi’s agenda in China will also include meetings with Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China. The visit holds significance for both nations, reflecting their longstanding diplomatic ties and the potential for enhanced collaboration in various sectors.
