Manufacturers play a critical role in the global effort to achieve net zero emissions, and the supply chain is a key area where significant progress can be made. Operational efficiencies that lead to reduced carbon output such as optimizing energy usage, cutting down on water waste, and minimizing transport emissions are essential strategies. Moreover, partnering with maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) providers that offer sustainable products and services can further support manufacturers in reaching their net zero targets.

Knowledge-Driven Sustainability
Selecting products with proven sustainability credentials is vital for achieving net zero goals, yet sourcing these options or verifying their claims can be challenging. The pressure on procurement teams, compounded by skills shortages and limited budgets, often leaves little time to explore sustainable alternatives. Here, collaboration with expert partners becomes invaluable. MRO specialists can provide the latest insights into sustainable product innovations, conduct audits to assess resource consumption, and recommend alternative products that are both eco-friendly and cost-effective.

The Importance of Clear Sustainability Labels
For sustainability efforts to gain traction, it’s crucial that environmentally friendly products are easily identifiable. According to the RS Indirect Procurement Report 2024, nearly three-quarters of respondents prioritize ESG criteria when selecting suppliers, products, and services. However, many buyers may find it difficult to make sustainable choices if the products lack clear labels or if the sustainability claims are not trustworthy. A transparent, claims-based framework is necessary to ensure that buyers can make informed decisions that positively impact the environment.

RS’s Better World product range, launched in 2022, is a prime example of this approach. It includes over 30,000 products that have been independently verified as sustainable, whether through reduced energy and emissions, or by supporting circularity through increased durability and recyclability. This range is expected to grow to 100,000 products, driven by the demand for credible, third-party verified sustainability claims.

Optimizing Supply Chains for Sustainability
Supply chains contribute significantly to an organization’s overall carbon footprint, with estimates ranging from 60 to 90 percent. Partnering with providers who offer transparency and traceability in their products can greatly aid in reducing this footprint. Implementing vendor-managed procurement and inventory services can also lead to more sustainable outcomes. For example, reducing the number of suppliers can lower transportation-related carbon emissions, and better inventory management can prevent overstocking, which leads to waste.
