The executive board of the World Bank has elected Ajay Banga, former CEO of Mastercard, as its president for a five-year term, effective from June 2. Nominated by US President Joe Biden in February, Banga emerged as the sole contender to succeed David Malpass, the current chief of the World Bank. Malpass, who faced criticism for his stance on climate change, is set to step down on June 1.

Banga, a finance and development expert born in India, is tasked with overseeing reforms at the World Bank to address pressing global issues such as climate change. The decision to elect him came after a four-hour interview on Monday, culminating in a vote by 24 board members, with Russia abstaining from the usual consensus-based process.

President Biden commended Banga on his appointment, emphasizing the importance of the World Bank’s role in poverty reduction and global prosperity. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen expressed confidence in Banga’s leadership and management skills, foreseeing his contribution to critical reforms and collaborations.

Sources anticipate Banga’s approval, considering his prior meetings with board members and formal interviews. Regarded as a “true change-maker,” Banga is expected to accelerate reforms at the World Bank, which aims to increase lending to developing countries for addressing challenges like climate change.

The World Bank, founded post-World War II, has historically been led by an American, with Banga becoming the latest in this tradition. Born in India and a US citizen since 2007, Banga has engaged with officials from 96 governments during his nomination, showcasing a commitment to the global development bank’s evolution and challenges.

Biden’s announcement of Banga’s candidacy in Bengalaru, India, was followed by active advocacy from Treasury Secretary Yellen and her team. Banga’s three-week world tour, spanning eight countries, emphasized his dedication to engaging with government officials, business leaders, and civil society groups in his new role as the World Bank’s president.
