Vietnam’s fresh coconut exports are set to see significant growth, driven by new agreements with China. The recently established protocol on phytosanitary requirements for Vietnamese fresh coconuts will facilitate broader access to the Chinese market, according to Nguyen Quoc Manh, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
In addition to China, there is strong demand for Vietnamese coconuts in markets such as India and the Middle East. Cao Ba Dang Khoa, Vice Chairman and General Secretary of the Vietnam Coconut Association, projects that export revenues could reach $250 million this year.
Vietnam is a key player in the global coconut market, ranking 6th among the top 10 countries for cultivation area and production. With approximately 200,000 hectares of coconut plantations, Vietnam produces 2.1 million tonnes of coconuts annually.
As part of its development plan for key industrial crops, Vietnam aims to expand its coconut cultivation area to between 195,000 and 210,000 hectares by 2030. The Mekong Delta will see the majority of this expansion, with 170,000 to 175,000 hectares, while the coastal south-central region will contribute 16,000 to 20,000 hectares.
By 2030, over 30% of coconut cultivation areas are expected to adhere to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and equivalent standards, with a similar proportion of production zones receiving certification. The adoption of innovative farming techniques, such as inter-cropping and integrated farming, is anticipated to enhance land productivity.
Additionally, there is potential for coconut-growing areas to develop into eco-tourism destinations. These areas could offer experiences such as garden tours, local cuisine, and visits to traditional coconut processing facilities, potentially creating unique products and boosting tourism revenue.
