ABB Unveils OmniCore, a New Robotics Control Platform

by Geraldine S.
06/04/2024
in Automation & Robotics, Industry

ABB Robotics has announced the launch of OmniCore, a new robotics control platform designed to enhance automation with improved speed, precision, and sustainability. The launch represents a significant investment in robotic technology, with over $170 million allocated to developing this next-generation system. OmniCore introduces a modular and future-proof control architecture that integrates artificial intelligence, sensor technology, and cloud computing, enabling the creation of advanced autonomous robotic applications. According to Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation Business Area, this development responds to the global need for more flexible, efficient, and sustainable operations amidst labor shortages and economic uncertainties.

The platform boasts enhanced motion performance, achieving robot path accuracy of less than 0.6mm and operational speeds up to 1,600mm per second. These improvements allow for greater automation precision in applications such as arc welding, mobile phone assembly, and laser cutting. OmniCore also enables robots to operate up to 25 percent faster and consume up to 20 percent less energy compared to its predecessor, the IRC5 controller. Built on a scalable and modular design, OmniCore supports a wide range of functions across diverse industries, including biotechnology and construction. It features over 1,000 hardware and software enhancements, such as ABB’s Absolute Accuracy and PickMaster® Twin, facilitating the design, operation, and optimization of robotic systems.

Marc Segura, Division President at ABB Robotics, highlighted OmniCore’s unified system management capabilities, which integrate motion control, sensor inputs, and application equipment. This feature enables seamless operation under a single control platform, enhancing productivity and creating new opportunities for value addition across sectors. For instance, automotive manufacturers using OmniCore can increase their production speed significantly, which translates into a substantial competitive advantage. As ABB celebrates its 50th anniversary in robotics, OmniCore marks a new milestone in its long history of innovation, which includes the introduction of the world’s first microprocessor-controlled robot and the pioneering RobotStudio® software. The new platform is set to replace the IRC5 controller, which will be phased out by June 2026, though ABB will continue supporting IRC5 users with necessary parts and services throughout the lifespan of their robots.
