On December 5, 2024, the MSU-IIT National Multi-Purpose Cooperative (NMPC) Head Office in Palao hosted a successful event called “myCyberSafe: Cybersecurity Awareness Seminar.” About 40 participants joined in person and online from different branches of the cooperative. The seminar aimed to give employees, especially those in management and branch leaders, vital knowledge and practical skills about cybersecurity.
The event was organized by the Department of Information Technology (DIT) faculty from the College of Computer Studies (CCS), working together with MSU-IIT NMPC. The main goal was to raise awareness about cybersecurity in cooperatives, as new technologies are developing faster than most people can keep up with regarding online risks.
Dr. Edward L. Banawa, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of MSU-IIT NMPC, opened the seminar with introductory remarks. Afterward, Ms. Jerina Jean Ecleo, a faculty member at MSU-IIT, presented the “myCyberSafe” project. She emphasized the growing need for education about cybersecurity and the importance of staying safe against increasing digital threats in today’s fast-paced tech world.
In the morning session, attendees learned about important cybersecurity concepts. Assoc. Prof. Mia Amor C. Tinam-isan spoke on “Securing Your Digital Footprint: Basic Cyber Hygiene for Cooperative Employees.” She discussed the specific cybersecurity challenges in the Philippines, stressing the need for caution when engaging with online content. One of her key points was to “think before you click,” which is a simple yet effective way to avoid online risks.
Next, Asst. Prof. Paul B. Bokingkito Jr. led a session titled “Guarding Your Digital Identity: The Essentials of Data Privacy and Security.” His talk covered practical tips for protecting personal information, such as spotting phishing scams, managing internet cookies, and keeping passwords secure. He highlighted that “In a connected world, protecting your digital life is protecting your real life.”
After lunch, the afternoon session started with a fun interactive activity, followed by Asst. Prof. Jerame B. Beloy’s presentation on “The Legal Side of Cybersecurity: Laws and Regulations You Need to Know.” Beloy discussed the Cybercrime Prevention Act and the role of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). She explained the legal responsibilities cooperatives have to follow the National Cybersecurity Plan and warned about the dangers of sharing too much personal information online.
The seminar wrapped up with an open forum, allowing participants to ask questions and share thoughts about the topics discussed. Atty. Eddie Bouy B. Palad, DIT Chairperson, responded to questions and stressed the importance of being proactive about cybersecurity in the cooperative sector.
Ms. Ma. Camilla Ann R. Llamas served as the emcee for the seminar, with technical support from Asst. Prof. Nenen Borinaga. Special thanks were given to Internal Auditor Keithe Billones and Manager Aldie Alia of MSU-IIT NMPC for their essential contributions to organizing the event.
In closing, CEO Albert B. Teaño, JD, from MSU-IIT NMPC, highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration between MSU-IIT and the cooperative to strengthen cybersecurity practices and awareness.
This hybrid seminar was an important step towards creating a safer digital environment for cooperatives. It showcased the significance of partnerships in tackling the emerging cybersecurity issues that cooperatives face today. The success of the event was made possible through the support of the IT Department, CCS, and the WE CARE Office of MSU-IIT.
