UNIDO Adopts Resolution on Sustainable Supply Chains Initiated by Bangladesh

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) approved a resolution aimed at enhancing member states’ abilities to develop productive, resilient, and sustainable supply chains during its 20th General Conference held in Vienna. The resolution, initiated by Bangladesh, received unanimous support and was adopted on Saturday.

The week-long conference saw the participation of heads of government, ministers, and high-level delegations from 172 member states, according to a press release from the foreign ministry dated Saturday, 2 December.

The adoption of this resolution comes in response to the significant disruptions experienced by global supply chains due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine. These disruptions impacted producers, industries, and consumers worldwide. The resolution’s objective is to enable UNIDO to assist countries in enhancing supply chain resilience, preparing them for similar future challenges.

Moreover, the resolution aims to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders and implement tangible measures to ensure the sustainability, resilience, and productivity of global and regional supply chains. It places particular focus on supporting countries that produce goods and their suppliers.

The initiative will also support UNIDO’s capacity-building efforts, promoting equitable profit sharing among stakeholders, and ensuring fair participation in the supply chain. This includes securing fair prices, facilitating skill and knowledge transfer, enhancing access to markets and technology, and improving productivity for firms in developing countries.

This Bangladesh-proposed resolution was the sole resolution adopted by the General Conference during this session. Other proposed resolutions on gender equality, submitted by Mexico and Norway, and on environmental sustainability and circular economy, submitted by Armenia, were not adopted due to significant differences in positions among member states.

The successful adoption of the Bangladesh-initiated resolution was the result of persistent efforts by the Bangladesh delegation over the past four weeks to garner unanimous support from all member states.
