Malaysia Engages in Talks to Facilitate the Return of 1MDB Fugitive Jho Low

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that discussions are underway with international authorities to repatriate the fugitive financier, Jho Low, who is accused of masterminding the infamous 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. Low Taek Jho, widely known as Jho Low, faces charges in both Malaysia and the United States, alleging his involvement in the misappropriation of $4.5 billion from the sovereign wealth fund of the Southeast Asian nation.

The scandal implicated the diversion of substantial public funds into luxury assets, fine art, Hollywood projects, and accounts associated with former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak. Anwar disclosed that the efforts to secure Jho Low’s return are being conducted through diplomatic channels and involve collaboration with multiple countries.

Anwar, addressing local media, mentioned that the complex process includes engagement with intelligence services and Interpol. While he did not specify the countries involved or Jho Low’s current location, he expressed that other nations are cooperating, maintaining communication, and extending their support to facilitate the process.

When questioned about China’s potential involvement, Anwar opted not to provide further details, according to the New Straits Times. Last month, investigative journalist Bradley Hope suggested in a blog post that China might consider repatriating Jho Low in exchange for increased Chinese investment opportunities in Malaysia under the Anwar administration.

Numerous countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Singapore, have initiated investigations into the 1MDB scandal. In a recent development, Fugees rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel was found guilty by a Washington, DC jury for conspiring with Jho Low to unlawfully influence the US government.

In March, Malaysia’s highest court dismissed former Prime Minister Najib’s attempt to review his corruption conviction. The lower court had previously found Najib guilty and sentenced him to 12 years in prison in connection with the 1MDB scandal.
