South Korea’s IPO Market Rebounds as Investors Focus on Quality

South Korea’s IPO market is showing signs of recovery in the second half of 2026 after a sharp slowdown earlier in the year, although investors are becoming more selective about new listings.

Only 17 companies listed on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets during the first half, excluding SPACs, less than half the 38 listings recorded a year earlier. Total IPO proceeds also fell to 1.1 trillion won from 2.2 trillion won.

The slowdown was partly driven by strong investor concentration in large-cap stocks, which attracted significant capital during the KOSPI’s strong rally. Regulatory uncertainty surrounding dual listings also delayed several planned offerings.

Despite weaker overall issuance, retail investor participation remained strong. Around 82% of first-half IPOs recorded subscription competition above 1,000-to-1, compared with 42% during the same period last year.

The market is now gaining momentum. Four companies completed listings in July, while six more are scheduled for August. Between July and September, 14 companies are conducting institutional book-building, signaling a significant improvement in the IPO pipeline.

However, stronger supply does not necessarily guarantee a broad market recovery. Institutional investors are becoming more cautious, with August listings recording lower book-building competition ratios.

The shift suggests that South Korea’s IPO market is entering a more selective phase, where company fundamentals, growth potential and valuations are likely to play a greater role in attracting capital.

For businesses preparing to go public, the changing environment could encourage stronger financial positioning, clearer growth strategies and more competitive valuations as investors increasingly prioritize quality over quantity.
