Holcim was awarded the inaugural Manufacturing Sustainability Award by the Michigan Manufacturers Association (MMA) at an awards ceremony on November 6. This new award honors initiatives aimed at enhancing the sustainability of manufacturing practices across Michigan, where Holcim operates in locations including Alpena, Detroit, Saginaw, and St. Joe.
“We’re honored to receive this recognition from the Michigan Manufacturers Association for advancing sustainable manufacturing across the state,” stated Jaime Hill, Holcim’s North America regional head. “At Holcim, sustainability and economic development go hand-in-hand, and this drives our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, utilizing renewable energy sources, and providing low-carbon building solutions for our customers.”
John J. Walsh, President & CEO of the MMA, commended Holcim’s efforts: “Holcim’s dedication to sustainability is shaping the industry and Michigan’s environment for the better. This award recognizes their significant contributions toward greener cities, smarter infrastructure, and improved living standards.”
In recent years, Holcim has invested over $100 million in eco-friendly technologies. In June 2023, the company opened an alternative fuels facility as part of a $7.4 million, state-supported initiative, fueling 10% of operations at its Alpena plant. Additionally, Holcim recently completed its largest solar project in the Midwest, allowing the Alpena facility to generate 75% of its energy needs through renewable sources, supporting the company’s goal to power all U.S. operations with 100% renewable energy by 2030.
Holcim’s commitment to sustainability extends to projects across Michigan. This year, the company received a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports program, which aims to reduce emissions and improve air quality at the Detroit Wayne County Port Authority.
Holcim’s Alpena facility supports construction projects throughout Michigan, including the Gordie Howe Bridge, Comerica Park, Ford Field, and Little Caesars Arena. The cement produced is used in roads, schools, hospitals, and decorative structures across the Midwest and Ontario.
