Microsoft recently introduced Dynamics 365 Copilot, an artificial intelligence feature for its supply chain management platform, designed to assist shippers in identifying and responding to potential supply chain disruptions. This tool is part of a broader initiative to provide interactive, AI-driven support across various industries. Using Copilot within the Supply Chain Center platform, supply chain managers can monitor potential risks, like adverse weather conditions, and gain predictive insights to prepare for them.
Ray Smith, Vice President of Supply Chain, Business Applications and Platforms at Microsoft, explained that Copilot can help supply chain managers process large volumes of data efficiently. It aids in identifying problems and risks, as well as suggesting strategies for mitigation. The AI can, for instance, draft emails to suppliers alerting them about potential issues and expediting the response process.
The AI algorithm functions by scanning news articles and other sources to detect risks that might affect suppliers or partners, such as geopolitical or financial threats. It can then generate AI-drafted messages to inquire with suppliers about possible disruptions and the impact on purchase orders.
Microsoft’s Supply Chain Center, launched in November, acts as a command center to consolidate data across ERPs and third-party management solutions, addressing current supply chain challenges.
Similar initiatives in the tech industry include Amazon Web Services’ cloud application and Oracle’s recent updates to its Transportation Management and Global Trade Management platforms, part of its Oracle Fusion Cloud Supply Chain Management application. Oracle plans to enhance its sustainability features in the latter half of 2023.
