FedEx has made significant investments in sustainable infrastructure and electric vehicles (EVs) across Africa, contributing to economic growth and environmental progress in the region. In FY2024, the company directly contributed 0.1% to the net economic output of the transportation, storage, and communications sector in the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, and Africa (MEISA) region. Additionally, its indirect economic contribution to the region was estimated at $280 million. The company’s annual impact report also highlighted that FedEx contributed more than $85 billion globally to the economy in FY2024.
Raj Subramaniam, President and CEO of FedEx, emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing supply chains through advanced data and technology, which accelerates the flow of goods and ideas, driving economic growth worldwide. Kami Viswanathan, Regional President for MEISA at FedEx, noted the company’s role in supporting the growth of emerging technologies in the Middle East, connecting Africa’s dynamic population with global markets, and promoting India’s digital innovations.
As part of its sustainable logistics efforts, FedEx has committed to transforming its fleet to zero-emission vehicles by 2040. In South Africa, the company has already introduced electric delivery vehicles and consolidated operations into a more energy-efficient hub in Johannesburg. This hub now features sustainable technologies, including motion-activated lights and rainwater collection tanks to reduce the company’s environmental impact.
FedEx also improved its customs operations in Johannesburg by installing a new screening machine at its imports gateway facility, which allows customs officials to inspect shipments more efficiently, reducing processing time. In addition, FedEx launched the SME Connect Series in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria to help small and medium-sized businesses expand their global reach, contributing to local job creation and economic growth.
The company continues to support small businesses through its supplier purchasing program and has dedicated 2,400 volunteer hours to community projects in MEISA, including a donation to rural education initiatives in South Africa.
