Saudi Arabia’s national rail operator has officially opened a tender for the supply of 10 new passenger trainsets as part of efforts to expand capacity on its extensive northern rail corridor. The move is aligned with national transport strategies aimed at enhancing passenger mobility and supporting long‑distance rail travel across the kingdom.
The tender covers the design, manufacture, supply and maintenance of the trainsets, with bids expected by May 2026. The trains will operate on the Northern Network — a key rail artery stretching over approximately 2,700 km — and are intended to help meet rising demand for passenger services linking major cities in the region.
Officials noted that the expanded fleet is expected to significantly increase seating capacity, aiming to nearly triple annual passenger capacity to more than 2.4 million seats, and strengthen service reliability and comfort for long‑distance intercity travel.
The tender announcement underscores broader investments in the country’s rail infrastructure as part of national transport and logistics development plans. These investments include major network upgrades, capacity expansions and multimodal integration to support both passenger and freight mobility.
