China’s Electric Mobility Advances Create New Opportunities for Global Supply Chains

China’s latest electric mobility developments are opening new opportunities for freight transport, vehicle manufacturing and logistics across emerging markets. Innovations such as five-minute battery swapping could reduce vehicle downtime, improve fleet utilisation and make electric trucks more practical for commercial operations.

Battery-swapping technology offers a potential alternative to conventional charging by allowing compatible vehicles to resume operations within minutes. For logistics operators, shorter turnaround times could support more predictable delivery schedules, improve vehicle productivity and reduce dependence on diesel-powered transport. However, widespread adoption will depend on battery-swapping infrastructure, vehicle compatibility and investment costs.

Across Africa, Zimbabwe’s removal of import duties on fully electric heavy trucks could encourage adoption in freight, mining and construction. Meanwhile, partnerships to expand local battery servicing, repair and recycling are helping strengthen after-sales support and improve vehicle reliability. Developing local technical skills and maintenance networks will be essential to sustaining this growth.

In Southeast Asia, electric two-wheeler manufacturers are expanding distribution and exploring local production in Vietnam, while Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing network is creating opportunities for local electric vehicle assembly. In Brazil, new hybrid and electric vehicle launches are adding competition and expanding consumer choice.

These developments highlight how electric mobility is reshaping global supply chains, from vehicle assembly and component sourcing to maintenance and battery recycling. Greater investment in local manufacturing, workforce training and supporting infrastructure can help emerging economies capture more value from the transition while building more efficient and resilient transport networks.
