New Delhi: In the latest developments surrounding international trade, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has articulated India’s approach to negotiating trade and investment agreements as being grounded in fairness and openness. This declaration came as India and the European Union embarked on the seventh round of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that began on 19 February.

During these talks, key focal points include an Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) and a pact concerning Geographical Indications (GIs). Minister Goyal conveyed the potential benefits of forging robust trade relationships with India, citing the country’s substantial market capacity propelled by a burgeoning and skilled young population. “Over the next 30 years, India’s demographic strengths are expected to yield substantial economic opportunities and demand, benefiting global trade dynamics,” he stated at the CII India-Europe conclave on Wednesday.

Minister Goyal reiterated India’s commitment to inclusivity and gender equality within its economic growth strategies. He highlighted ongoing initiatives aimed at not just fostering growth among women but also promoting women-led development. According to Goyal, these efforts are integral to India’s broader goals of achieving sustainable and inclusive economic advancement.

He confidently noted that India’s robust macroeconomic fundamentals and vibrant pool of young talent are poised to facilitate rapid and sustained economic expansion. This growth is seen as pivotal to India’s strategy in enhancing its international trade relations.

The ongoing negotiations with the EU are set to address a variety of complex issues. These include resolving longstanding trade disputes at the World Trade Organization related to key exports such as mobile phones, their components, integrated circuits, and optical instruments. Another significant agenda item is the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs), where both parties aim to elevate safeguarding measures to standards comparable to those upheld by the EU, enhancing the international recognition and protection of regional products.

During the previous sixth round of talks held in October 2023, the negotiations achieved progress in 18 out of 23 chapters, marking a substantial advance towards the overarching goals of the trade discussions. The current seventh round anticipates further progress with the EU delegation visiting India in multiple phases.

Adding an international perspective, Juraj Blanár, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia, underscored the strategic importance of the EU-India relationship. Speaking at the negotiations, Blanár emphasized Slovakia’s keen interest in deepening this partnership, which he views as critical to achieving a comprehensive and beneficial trade agreement, including the IPA and the agreement on Geographical Indications.

The EU stands as a major destination for Indian exports, ranking just behind the United States. Despite historical challenges posed by non-tariff barriers that have slightly impeded India’s goods exports to the EU over the past two decades, the successful conclusion of an FTA could alleviate these impediments. This would likely enhance market access for Indian agricultural products, among others, potentially boosting trade flows between India and the EU significantly.
