Navigating Challenges in Supply Chain Partnerships

in Supply Chain, Supply Chain Transparency

Supply chains are constantly challenged by economic fluctuations, having to balance cost-efficiency while ensuring a steady flow of products to the market. These challenges persist regardless of whether the economic climate is unfavorable or favorable. However, what happens when supply chains must tackle all these issues simultaneously?

Over the past two years, manufacturers, retailers, and distributors have grappled with a multifaceted dilemma brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. They’ve faced issues such as factory closures, supply chain congestion, labor shortages, limited warehouse space, and erratic demand patterns that vary by product and industry. To compound matters, they’ve also had to contend with record inflation and soaring fuel prices, adding unprecedented complexity to their operations.

In the world of supply chains, collaboration is key. Supply chains involve a complex network of partners working together to transform raw materials into finished goods and deliver them to customers as efficiently as possible. While the exact mechanisms differ from one company to another based on industry, location, logistical requirements, and product characteristics, the pandemic has highlighted certain shared challenges. In our annual list of 100 Great Supply Chain Partners, we explore how these partners have risen to meet these challenges, showcasing instances of effective collaboration during these testing times.

A couple of recurring themes have emerged:

  1. Managing Growth Amid Resource Constraints: Many companies have grappled with managing substantial growth during a period of resource constraints.
  2. Balancing Cost Reduction and Improved Customer Service: The need to reduce costs while simultaneously enhancing customer service has presented a complex dilemma for supply chain professionals.

Each case study in our report presents a unique angle, demonstrating innovative solutions:

  • Coyote Logistics and Vector redefined the concept of “peak season” to manage parcel delivery drivers effectively.
  • E.D. Etnyre, in partnership with Tada Cognitive Solutions, overcame the limitations of legacy systems to handle a massive influx of data.
  • Farmer’s Business Network, with the support of SnapFulfil, streamlined warehouse management by eliminating manual processes.
  • Fruit of the Loom modernized its financial management system in collaboration with OneStream.
  • HJI Supply Chain Solutions partnered with Alpine Supply Chain Solutions to overcome challenges in implementing a new warehouse management system.
  • Horizon Hobby, in collaboration with Jones Lang Lasalle, managed an expected doubling of business while enhancing supply chain efficiency and the customer experience.
  • Inova, with Logility, transitioned from spreadsheet-based planning to digitization for planning capabilities.
  • Levi Strauss consolidated operations and embraced the omnichannel model with the assistance of TGW.
  • Palo Alto Networks, working with Anaplan, addressed supply chain issues and improved its sales and operations planning (S&OP) process.
  • Parts Town, in partnership with Bastian Solutions, maintained high inventory levels while controlling costs.
  • Philipp Plein employed artificial intelligence in logistics management for its high-end luxury brand in collaboration with 7Bridges.
  • Plant Shop Seattle pivoted to direct delivery when the pandemic limited customer access to the store, aided by Circuit.

These innovative solutions were achieved through strong partnerships, which are the cornerstone of successful supply chains, whether in challenging or favorable times.
