Nigeria continues to enhance its leadership in the African data protection sector with the recent appointment of Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), as Chair of the Anglophone Countries Committee of the Network of African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA).
The appointment was confirmed during the Committee’s meeting on April 2, 2025, marking a significant moment for Nigeria’s influence in the development of data protection laws across the continent.
The Anglophone Countries Committee within NADPA plays a crucial role in promoting collaboration among English-speaking African nations to improve data privacy and protection regulations. As Chair, Dr. Olatunji will work alongside regulators and stakeholders to strengthen legal frameworks, encourage cross-border data cooperation, and contribute to global data governance discussions.
In his statement following the appointment, Dr. Olatunji expressed appreciation for the trust placed in Nigeria, recognizing the importance of collective action in safeguarding privacy rights across Africa. He highlighted the role of data protection in fostering economic growth, innovation, and trust within the digital economy.
In addition to his new role, Nigeria is set to host the 2025 NADPA Annual General Meeting and Conference from May 6–8, 2025. The event, themed “Balancing Innovation in Africa: Data Protection and Privacy in Emerging Technologies,” will address key topics in data security, regulatory compliance, and the ethical use of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and blockchain.
