Japan is using satellite data to improve agricultural forecasting, helping producers and retailers better anticipate cabbage supply, adjust distribution, and reduce food waste.
A new initiative in Gunma Prefecture uses satellite observations of cabbage growth to forecast shipment volumes up to eight weeks in advance. When abundant supply is expected, distribution and promotional activities can be expanded, while lower-supply periods can be managed more carefully to support price stability.
The approach connects agriculture, technology, retail, and logistics through better visibility into future supply. By using data to plan distribution earlier, the initiative could help farmers reach more customers while making food supply chains more efficient and responsive.
The project could also provide a model for applying satellite-based forecasting to other crops and regions, supporting smarter and more resilient agricultural supply chains.
