Vietnam Accelerates Green Logistics Shift to Boost Sustainability and Competitiveness

in Sustainable Logistics

Vietnam’s logistics industry is rapidly moving beyond voluntary “green” initiatives toward a mandatory focus on environmentally sustainable operations as part of wider supply chain transformation efforts. Industry leaders say sustainability is now central — not optional — for strengthening logistics competitiveness and aligning with global supply chain expectations.

At a recent logistics sector event, the Vietnam Logistics Business Association (VLA) emphasised that green logistics has become a core requirement for the industry, with national strategies now setting concrete targets for energy transition, digital adoption and sustainable transport through to 2035 and beyond. These plans highlight the government’s commitment to integrating cleaner technologies and more efficient processes across freight and warehousing operations.

While some smaller logistics firms are cautious about potential cost impacts, advocates note that digitalisation and greener practices — such as optimised routing, inland waterway transport and coastal shipping services — will ultimately reduce waste, lower long‑term operating costs and improve resource utilisation, boosting sector competitiveness.

Inland waterway and rail transport are being prioritised as eco‑friendly alternatives to road freight, with government planning aiming to raise waterway transport’s share of the logistics mix to over 30 % from around 8 % currently, helping cut carbon emissions and freight costs.

Experts also underscore the importance of policy alignment and practical support for small and medium‑sized logistics enterprises, which make up the bulk of Vietnam’s logistics market, to help them adopt sustainable technologies and business models. A combination of regulatory guidance, infrastructure investment and industry‑tailored solutions will be key to balancing ambition with real‑world implementation.
