US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo embarked on a three-day visit to Beijing, aiming to improve the economic relationship between the United States and China. Arriving on Sunday, Raimondo’s visit involves meetings with Chinese officials and business leaders, marking an effort by President Joe Biden’s administration to stabilize ties with the world’s second-largest economy.
On Monday, Raimondo met with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. During the meeting, she emphasized the importance of stable US-China relations, acknowledging the complexities and challenges of the relationship. The US Department of Commerce reported Raimondo stating the significance of direct, open, and practical communication, despite disagreements on certain issues.
This visit follows a recent series of high-level engagements between the two countries. In the previous year’s G20 summit in Bali, Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed to enhance communication. Subsequently, other key US officials, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and climate envoy John Kerry, have also visited China.
Relations between the US and China have seen significant strain over various issues, including trade, national security, the Ukraine conflict, and the status of Taiwan. The Biden administration has continued the trend of imposing restrictions on Chinese trade and industry, citing national security concerns – a policy direction initiated during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Beijing has criticized these actions as counterproductive to globalization and as attempts to hinder China’s economic advancement. While US officials have refuted any intent to curb China’s growth, they maintain that their actions aim to reduce economic risks in the bilateral relationship. This latest visit by Raimondo represents a continued effort to navigate these complexities and foster a more stable economic partnership between the two nations.
