The United States has established new economic and financial working groups with China in an effort to enhance communication and manage tensions between the two nations. The working groups, overseen by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng, aim to facilitate structured, ongoing dialogues on economic and financial policy issues.
The US Department of Treasury announced that these groups would convene regularly, providing platforms for in-depth discussions and information exchange on macroeconomic and financial developments. This initiative is a part of the broader strategy by US President Joe Biden’s administration to stabilize relations with Beijing, following a period of deteriorating ties due to disputes over trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea, and Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific.
The formation of these groups builds on Treasury Secretary Yellen’s visit to China in July, which was geared towards establishing lasting communication channels between the world’s two largest economies. Yellen emphasized the importance of dialogue, especially in areas of disagreement, aligning with President Biden’s approach post his meeting with President Xi Jinping in Bali.
Relations between the US and China reached a particularly strained point in February when the US shot down a Chinese balloon, alleging it was used for espionage. China disputed this claim, stating the balloon was a civilian airship for weather research that had strayed off course.
The incident followed a controversial visit to Taiwan by Nancy Pelosi, then the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, marking her as the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in over two decades, a move that Beijing, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, strongly opposed.
Despite these tensions, high-level engagements have resumed, with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visiting Beijing before Yellen’s trip. Nonetheless, the Biden administration continues to enforce trade restrictions on China in sectors deemed critical to national security, such as advanced semiconductor technology. These working groups represent a significant step in managing the complex relationship between the US and China, focusing on economic cooperation while addressing national security concerns.
