Scientists are urging the Group of Seven (G7) to take immediate action to address the world’s insufficient preparedness for the next pandemic. The People’s Vaccine Alliance, in an open letter released during the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, emphasized that the benefits of scientific advancements during the COVID-19 pandemic primarily reach the wealthiest countries, leaving developing nations without access to essential treatments and vaccines.

The alliance, consisting of over 100 former world leaders, Nobel laureates, scientists, and economists, expressed concern about the unequal distribution of medical countermeasures and the influence of pharmaceutical companies. The group highlighted the critical need to deploy treatments globally, removing barriers to medicine and vaccine development and production. It pointed out that during the COVID-19 and AIDS pandemics, strict intellectual property rules led to pharmaceutical monopolies, hindering widespread production of affordable generic vaccines and medicines in developing countries.

The letter also raised apprehensions about pharmaceutical companies lobbying for a “maximalist approach” to intellectual property rules for vaccines and treatments. Last month, pharmaceutical CEOs met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, the host of the G7, advocating for the protection of intellectual property rights, while public health experts called for the suspension of such rules.

The alliance urged G7 leaders, representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, to use their influence to shape global pandemic preparedness. Emphasizing the importance of standing with scientists and physicians in support of equity and the right to life, the letter urged leaders to prioritize global health over corporate profits during health emergencies.

While the G7 summit is expected to focus on Russia’s war in Ukraine and concerns about China’s influence, the call for improved pandemic preparedness emphasizes the ongoing global challenges related to public health. The World Health Organization recently declared the end of the COVID-19 pandemic as a global health emergency, urging the world to learn from past mistakes and prioritize lessons learned to prevent unnecessary loss of lives in future health crises.
