Uranium emerged as Namibia’s top export commodity in February 2025, accounting for N$10.1 billion or 26.3% of the country’s total export earnings, according to the latest trade report from the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA). The uranium exports were primarily directed to Chinese and French markets.
The NSA’s February trade bulletin revealed a 5.1% decrease in total export revenue compared to January 2025, when Namibia earned N$10.7 billion from exports.
Other significant export commodities included non-monetary gold, which contributed 17.6% of the total export earnings, mainly destined for South Africa. Fish was the third largest export, making up 12% of total exports, with key destinations including Spain, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Petroleum oils ranked fourth, accounting for 4.6% of exports to Botswana and Zambia, while inorganic chemical elements made up another 4.6%, primarily heading to Switzerland and China. Together, the top five export commodities represented 65% of Namibia’s total export revenue in February.
Year-on-year, Namibia’s export performance showed a notable improvement, with February 2025 exports up 66.7% compared to N$6.1 billion in February 2024.
However, the country’s import bill in February 2025 stood at N$12.2 billion, reflecting a 9.3% decline from January’s import value of N$13.4 billion. This led to a trade deficit of N$2 billion, an improvement from the N$2.7 billion deficit recorded in January 2025.
The NSA report also highlighted a decline in the number of export destinations, with Namibia sending goods to 99 countries in February, down from 107 in January. On the import side, the country sourced goods from 147 countries.
Namibia’s trade strategy is focused on its participation in key free trade agreements, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC) protocol on trade, the economic partnership agreement with the European Union and the United Kingdom, and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
