Canada-U.S. Bridge Agreement Aims to Boost Cross-Border Supply Chain Growth

in Logistics & Transportation

A new agreement between Canada and the United States is expected to strengthen cross-border trade and regional economic development by sharing operating profits from the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a key transportation link connecting Ontario and Michigan.

Under the revised arrangement, 50% of the bridge’s operating profit will be directed to a U.S.-managed regional development fund for the first 15 years of operation. The investment is intended to support infrastructure and economic initiatives that encourage greater trade activity, improve freight movement and enhance long-term supply chain connectivity between the two countries.

Canadian officials noted that operating profits are expected to remain limited during the bridge’s early years as traffic volumes gradually increase. Once the 15-year period ends, Canada will resume collecting the bridge’s operating profits until construction-related debt has been repaid. Afterward, future revenues will be shared with the state of Michigan under the original agreement.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is expected to play a vital role in North American supply chains by improving the movement of goods across one of the continent’s busiest trade corridors. Increased investment in regional infrastructure is anticipated to support stronger logistics networks, enhance freight efficiency and create new opportunities for cross-border commerce.

The agreement underscores the importance of international collaboration in developing transportation infrastructure that supports resilient supply chains and long-term economic growth.
