A recent report by Rockwell Automation Inc., a leader in industrial automation and digital transformation, has highlighted the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies among UK manufacturers to enhance productivity and maintain competitiveness.
The 9th annual “State of Smart Manufacturing Report” surveyed over 1,500 manufacturers from 17 countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The study revealed that the UK is at the forefront in embracing generative AI, with 79% of UK manufacturers planning to incorporate these technologies into their operations in 2024.
Additionally, the report shows that 94% of UK manufacturers intend to use AI and ML for advanced analytics, which is above the global average of 91%. This indicates the highest adoption rate among the surveyed countries. However, the report also identified a significant challenge in the form of a skills shortage, with 33% of UK respondents citing a lack of skilled workforce as a barrier to implementing smart manufacturing technologies.
Despite these challenges, UK manufacturers are increasing their technology investments. According to the report, there was a 30% year-over-year increase in technology spending across Europe, with 73% of UK companies allocating between 21% and 50% of their operating budget to technology, the highest level reported in Europe.
Quality control is a major area of focus for the application of AI and ML in manufacturing, with 38% of UK companies planning to deploy these technologies for quality assurance purposes. Other significant areas for AI and ML application include cybersecurity, logistics, and customer service.
Asa Arvidsson, Regional Vice President Sales, North Region at Rockwell Automation, commented on the findings: “The findings of this year’s ‘State of Smart Manufacturing Report’ underscore a pivotal moment for the industry, as UK manufacturers lead the charge in integrating AI and machine learning technologies.”
Arvidsson added, “By leveraging AI to enhance data-driven decision-making and operational efficiency, UK manufacturers are setting new benchmarks for innovation and competitiveness on the global stage.”
The report also emphasized the role of technology in empowering the workforce and building operational resilience. Rather than replacing human roles, AI is being used to address labor shortages and skill gaps. UK manufacturers are also focusing on quality improvement, financial stability, and data-driven decision-making to enhance their operational resilience and competitiveness.
