The United Kingdom has seen a slip in global innovation rankings and trails many advanced economies in industrial automation, according to a recent report from Make UK. Despite its position as one of the world’s largest economies, the country’s innovation performance and robotics density are losing ground to competitors in Europe and Asia, raising concerns about productivity and future competitiveness.
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index (GII), the UK — once ranked as high as second globally in 2015 — fell to fifth place by 2024, indicating slower relative progress against innovation leaders.
A notable point of weakness highlighted in the report is robotics density — a key indicator of automation in manufacturing. The UK recorded just 112 industrial robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers, placing it 24th globally and well below both the European Union average (208 robots) and leading Asian adopters such as South Korea (over 1,000 robots per 10,000 workers). Asian countries dominate the top of robotics rankings, with Singapore, Japan and China also ahead of the UK.
Report authors say the gap reflects structural barriers to technology adoption among small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) — including fragmented support systems, complex funding and limited access to digital skills training. While around 70 % of UK manufacturers invest in digital tools, only about 10 % operate fully digital factories, underscoring a large efficiency and innovation shortfall.
Industry advocates argue that enhancing automation and AI adoption could boost productivity and growth, citing examples from economies that integrate public R&D investment, workforce development and industrial policy into unified national strategies. Without such coherent support, the UK risks falling further behind peers in advanced manufacturing and logistics automation.
For the logistics sector — where robotics, AI and automation are increasingly central to warehouse, distribution and transport operations — the report’s findings highlight the importance of closing the automation gap to sustain competitiveness and drive modernised supply chains.
