Hong Kong’s top security official, Chris Tang, has criticized The Wall Street Journal for what he considers a misleading opinion piece regarding the recent seizure of a sculpture commemorating the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. The article accused the Journal of misrepresenting the situation and condemned the removal of the artwork, known as the Pillar of Shame, by Hong Kong national security police.

The sculpture, created by Danish artist Jens Galschiøt, was seized as part of an investigation into alleged “incitement to subversion.” The removal took place ahead of the June 4 anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, an event prohibited from commemoration in Hong Kong since the enactment of a national security law in 2020.

Tang’s letter to The Wall Street Journal, published on Tuesday, disputes the characterization of the sculpture as an “artwork.” He emphasizes the legality and rationale behind collecting evidence as part of an ongoing investigation. Tang also criticizes the article’s claims that the seizure occurred “without due process,” asserting that a court warrant was obtained, and a press release was issued.

In the opinion piece titled “Subversive Art is a crime in Hong Kong,” published on Monday, journalist Jillian Kay Melchior argued that the seizure indicated that Hong Kong was not “back to normal” despite efforts to attract tourists and businesses. She suggested a potential restriction on art displays to only those approved by the Communist Party, framing subversive art as a potential criminal offense.

The situation reflects the broader erosion of rights and freedoms in Hong Kong, which were guaranteed until 2047 under the “one country, two systems” arrangement. The national security law, implemented in response to the 2019 protests, has significantly curtailed these rights, leading to the arrest of pro-democracy figures, the closure of critical media outlets, and restrictions on anti-Communist Party criticism.

As of Wednesday afternoon, The Wall Street Journal had not published Tang’s letter, and responses from both the Hong Kong government and the Journal were pending at the time of reporting.
