Following the re-election of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish lira experienced a significant decline to record lows, indicating concerns in currency markets about the country’s economic future under the continued leadership of Erdogan.

On Monday, the lira weakened to 20.01 against the United States dollar, marking its worst trading day in eight months after the high-stakes run-off on the previous day. Concurrently, Turkish stocks exhibited an upward trend, with the benchmark BIST-100 index closing the day up 4.1% and the banking index rising by 2.13%.

The lira’s depreciation to a historic low reflects ongoing challenges in Turkey, including a cost-of-living crisis and dwindling foreign reserves. President Erdogan, in his campaign promises and victory speech, emphasized plans to reduce inflation to single digits and stimulate economic growth. However, some analysts express skepticism about the unconventional nature of his economic policies, foreseeing a potentially negative economic outlook.

Erdogan’s pursuit of interest rate cuts in 2021 contributed to the devaluation of the Turkish lira and led to a peak inflation rate of 85.5% last year. The president’s stance on interest rates differs from global central banks, which were raising rates to combat inflation. This economic backdrop, coupled with the aftermath of double earthquakes in February, posed challenges for Erdogan’s re-election bid.

Despite criticisms, Erdogan defended his economic strategies, assuring the Turkish populace that increased investment, production, exports, and a future current account surplus would drive Turkey’s gross domestic product upward. The contrasting trends in the lira and stock market underscore the complexity and uncertainties surrounding Turkey’s economic landscape in the wake of the recent election.
