Turkey Increases Public Worker Salaries by 45% Ahead of Elections

In a recent announcement, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed that the Turkish government is implementing a 45% salary increase for its workers just five days before the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections. This move comes amid a closely contested race between Erdogan and the main opposition presidential candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

Erdogan made the announcement during a meeting in Ankara that focused on the economic and social rights of public workers, utilizing a framework known as the Public Collective Bargaining Agreement Framework Protocol.

“We are increasing wages by 45 percent, including the welfare share,” stated President Erdogan, as reported on the government’s website. He further mentioned, “Thus, we are raising the lowest public worker wage to TL15,000 [$768 per month].” Erdogan expressed his commitment to ongoing efforts to enhance the salaries and pensions of civil servants, with additional plans in July based on inflation differences and the welfare share.

As Turkey’s economy takes center stage in the upcoming elections, Erdogan’s unconventional approach to interest rate cuts in late 2021 led to the devaluation of the Turkish lira and a peak inflation rate of 85.5% last year. The country’s economic challenges, compounded by devastating earthquakes in February, have posed significant hurdles for Erdogan’s re-election campaign.

President Erdogan, who has been at Turkey’s helm for two decades, is campaigning on a platform that promises reduced interest rates as a strategy to address the economic crisis. Additionally, he has pledged to lower inflation to single digits and stimulate economic growth.
