The Thai Ministry of Transport has announced a 2.68 trillion baht (approximately US$80.5 billion) investment plan to transform the country’s transportation infrastructure and promote sustainable logistics. The initiative will focus on expanding rail networks, upgrading major airports, and supporting environmentally friendly logistics to reduce road congestion and greenhouse gas emissions by 45.6 million tonnes by 2030. This project aligns with Thailand’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Action Plan for 2021–2030, reflecting its climate objectives under the Paris Agreement.
According to Panya Chupanich, Director of the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, the ministry is prioritizing the electrification of public transportation. Key plans include deploying 3,100 electric buses in Bangkok by the end of this year, with an additional 1,520 scheduled for launch by 2025. The project also emphasizes expanding Bangkok’s electric train network to achieve 554 kilometers of rail coverage by September 2025. This network expansion will feature a unified ticketing system and a flat-rate fare of 20 baht ($0.60) per journey. Key projects include double-track railway expansions and high-speed train links such as the Bangkok–Nakhon Ratchasima high-speed rail and a high-speed rail project connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports.
Additionally, the ministry plans to introduce light rail transit systems in key regional cities, including Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Phuket. To enhance logistics efficiency, 4,044 kilometers of double-track rail lines have already been completed, and another 1,479 kilometers are set to be added by 2029. The high-speed rail plan features the three-airport link, a 220-kilometer route budgeted at 226.7 billion baht, along with the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, which is currently under construction.
