Tesla is reportedly encountering difficulties in producing the 4680 battery cells intended for its Cybertruck, as stated in a recent Reuters report. It is important to note that Reuters has a history of publishing negative reports about Tesla, leading some to approach this information with caution.

According to the report, the production of 4680 battery cells is identified as a significant bottleneck in the Cybertruck manufacturing process. While Tesla has not officially commented on the matter, it’s essential to consider the context of the company’s overall production strategy.

Even if there are challenges with battery cell production, Tesla may be aligning it with the overall production capacity for the Cybertruck, which is currently not expected to reach 24,000 units per year.

The report suggests that Tesla is struggling with the industrial-scale implementation of its dry-coating technology for the 4680 cells. Nine individuals, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the matter, claim that Tesla has not achieved the necessary scale to make 4680 batteries efficiently. The specific challenge is related to dry-coating the cathode, where the mixing of cathode materials—lithium, manganese, and nickel—with a binder to produce a cathode without using moisture is proving difficult.

Tesla has not officially addressed these claims, Drew Baglino, Tesla’s SVP of engineering, previously mentioned that the company has successfully ramped up battery production at two lines at Gigafactory Texas. The plan is to have eight lines in operation by the end of 2024, with full deployment contingent on consistent success replicating the achievements of the initial two lines.

It’s important to monitor developments in Tesla’s battery production technology, particularly with the dry-coating process, as the 4680 cells play a crucial role in the company’s future electric vehicle programs. The extent to which these challenges may impact Cybertruck production remains to be seen, and further clarification from Tesla is awaited.
