Global Cybersecurity Patent Landscape Reflects China’s Technological Growth

Chinese companies have made significant strides in global patent holdings within the cybersecurity technology sector, according to a recent report by Nikkei Asia. The report, in collaboration with U.S. information services provider LexisNexis, indicates that Chinese firms, including Huawei and Tencent, rank among the top patent holders in this sector. As of August, data from 95 countries and regions compiled by Nikkei Asia revealed that six of the top 10 global patent holders were Chinese companies.

IBM leads the chart with 6,363 patents, followed closely by Huawei with 5,735 and Tencent with 4,803 patents. Other notable Chinese entities in the top 10 include Ant Group, a financial arm of Alibaba, which secured sixth place with 3,922 patents, while Alibaba Group Holding and China Investment Corp. claimed spots with 3,122 and 3,042 patents, respectively.

This development coincides with escalating tensions between the U.S. and China, prompting Chinese companies to prioritize self-reliance in technological advancements. Heightened restrictions, such as the recent tightening on artificial intelligence chip exports to China, reflect growing concerns in the U.S. over the potential dual-use of such technology for military purposes by Beijing.

Hiroko Osaka, head of marketing in Asia for LexisNexis Japan’s intellectual property department, highlighted a notable increase in patent filings by Chinese firms, particularly since 2018. Osaka emphasized that this surge in applications may be linked to the global battle for dominance in advanced technology and data, reinforcing the importance of intellectual property protection.

Huawei, in particular, has faced significant challenges due to U.S. sanctions aimed at securing American networks and supply chains. Restrictions imposed since 2018 have barred U.S. agencies from procuring Huawei equipment or services, further intensified by the company’s placement on the U.S. trade blacklist in 2019. These actions have limited Huawei’s access to foreign-produced semiconductors that utilize U.S. technologies.

The emphasis on intellectual property rights underlines the competitive landscape in technology and data, contributing to the substantial increase in patent filings by Chinese firms. This trend underscores the evolving dynamics within the global cybersecurity technology sector and the strategic approaches adopted by various companies amid geopolitical tensions.
