Switzerland is set to finalize an updated free trade agreement with China in early 2026, following constructive discussions between Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The revision aims to modernize the existing 2014 deal and expand trade opportunities for both countries.
Switzerland, whose third-largest trading partner is China, hopes the refreshed agreement will increase the number of products eligible for zero tariffs, benefiting key sectors including watches, pharmaceuticals, and other Swiss exports. Both sides emphasized that the negotiations are proceeding constructively and are focused on promoting open and fair trade under international rules.
The updated deal will also address service sectors and investment opportunities, offering greater clarity and support for businesses. Officials highlighted that the enhancements are expected to support both consumer and business interests while fostering a more efficient and predictable trading environment.
The ongoing negotiations reflect Switzerland’s broader strategy to strengthen international trade ties and ensure supply chain efficiency amid evolving global trade dynamics.
