As the United States prepares to implement new tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, industry experts emphasize the importance of supply chain mapping to mitigate financial impacts. During a recent webinar hosted by Foley & Lardner LLP, trade professionals discussed key strategies for businesses navigating potential disruptions.
Alejandro Gomez-Strozzi, an international trade attorney and former undersecretary of economy for Mexico, highlighted the significance of identifying supply chain origins to anticipate tariff-related challenges. He noted that companies with a clear understanding of their supply networks are better positioned to adapt to shifting trade policies.
In response to the evolving trade landscape, Mexico has introduced “Plan Mexico,” an initiative led by President Claudia Sheinbaum aimed at bolstering economic growth and attracting foreign investment. According to Fernando Camarena, a senior adviser at Foley & Lardner, the plan includes tax incentives, streamlined administrative processes, and infrastructure investments to promote nearshoring with U.S. companies.
Meanwhile, several infrastructure projects and business expansions are underway to support cross-border trade. The Vidal Cantu Industrial Center in Laredo, Texas, a joint development by Menlo Equities and Axis Partners, is expected to enhance logistics operations. Additionally, WWEX Group has announced the opening of a new office in Monterrey, Mexico, as part of its efforts to expand regional logistics capabilities.
The German automotive supplier Continental is also increasing its presence in Mexico, with an expansion in San Luis Potosà aimed at strengthening the production of key vehicle components. This investment underscores Mexico’s role as a key player in North American supply chains.
As trade policies continue to evolve, businesses are taking proactive steps to adjust their strategies, focusing on supply chain resilience and regional trade opportunities.
