A growing demand for oil transport has led newly built supertankers to sail empty on their maiden voyages, heading directly to pick up crude as soon as possible. Six supertankers delivered this year have undertaken such journeys from East Asia to the Middle East, Africa, or the Americas, a notable increase from just one last year.
Typically, new vessels carry refined fuels like gasoline on their first trip, but rising global oil output and longer shipping routes have shifted this practice. Tanker owners are prioritizing immediate crude collection to meet the strong demand for transport capacity.
Smaller tankers are also being used to supplement the trade, and transport rates for crude oil have risen sharply, reflecting the efficiency and urgency of the current system. The Baltic Dirty Tanker Index has surged more than 50% since July, highlighting the active market for crude transportation.
Industry experts note that locking in high daily rates for supertankers and Suezmax vessels is encouraging operators to prioritize rapid deployment for crude shipments, ensuring the global oil supply chain continues to flow smoothly.
