Sudan, the world’s leading producer of gum arabic, is currently grappling with a crisis that significantly impacts its gum arabic industry. Gum arabic, a natural emulsifier derived from acacia trees, is a critical ingredient in various products, ranging from sweets and cosmetics to medicines. It is particularly vital for the soft drinks industry, as it prevents sugar from settling in fizzy beverages.

Sudan accounts for approximately 70% of the global gross exports of gum arabic, making it an essential source of income for millions in the country. During the 1990s and 2000s, the Sudanese government attempted to use its dominant position in gum arabic production as leverage against Western sanctions. However, despite these efforts, the industry remained largely unaffected by sanctions due to exemptions specifically for gum arabic.

The current conflict in Sudan, which erupted on April 15 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, has had a devastating impact on the country. Thousands have been killed, millions displaced, and an acute humanitarian crisis has emerged, severely affecting the gum arabic industry. Producers report a significant price drop of about 60% due to the conflict.

Transportation of gum arabic has become perilous, with many trucks destroyed or hijacked since the conflict’s onset. The instability and violence have made it challenging to transport the product to Port Sudan, the country’s main seaport. Additionally, the decreased value of the product in the market has affected the trade flow significantly.

Despite these challenges, large beverage companies have stockpiled gum arabic supplies for three to six months and have not yet faced major issues. However, if the conflict continues without resolution, these companies could face difficulties in the near future.

Beyond the immediate impact of the conflict, the gum arabic trade in Sudan also faces broader socioeconomic challenges and environmental threats such as climate change. Younger generations are leaving gum arabic farming for more lucrative opportunities in gold mining, and acacia trees are being cut down at an alarming rate. This situation is compounded by increasing desertification and competition for water and land resources.

The crisis in Sudan’s gum arabic industry reflects broader issues in the country, including income inequality, resource distribution, and development debates. The ongoing conflict exacerbates these problems, threatening the future of one of Sudan’s major industries and highlighting the need for sustainable and equitable management of the country’s natural resources.
