Swedish audio streaming giant Spotify has reported an impressive milestone, reaching 515 million active monthly users by the end of March, surpassing market expectations. The company also noted an increase in paying subscribers, reaching 210 million, according to the announcement made on Tuesday.

Analysts, surveyed by Factset, had anticipated Spotify’s total active monthly users to be around 501 million, with paying subscribers projected to reach 207 million on average. In a statement, Spotify expressed satisfaction with its performance, citing the first quarter as its “strongest” since going public in 2018, with most performance indicators exceeding expectations.

However, Spotify also disclosed a deepening operating loss for the first quarter, amounting to 156 million euros ($172 million), compared to a loss of 6 million euros ($6.6 million) in the same period a year earlier. CEO Daniel Ek acknowledged the impact of macroeconomic uncertainties in the first quarter, affecting the company’s financials.

In January, Spotify, like other tech industry giants, announced a workforce reduction, cutting about 600 jobs from its 10,000-strong workforce. The move contributed to increased operating expenses due to severance-related charges.

Despite challenges, revenue, primarily driven by paying subscribers, witnessed a 14 percent growth, reaching 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion). However, this fell short of analysts’ expectations, which were set at 3.4 billion euros ($3.7 billion).

Spotify, known for strong subscriber growth, has struggled to post consistent profits since its launch. Although it has maintained a lead over competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music, the company faced annual losses. In 2022, Spotify reported a net loss of 430 million euros ($474 million), a significant increase from the 34 million euros ($37.5 million) loss in 2021.

Spotify’s foray into podcasting, marked by a more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) investment in recent years, has yet to prove its profitability. The platform’s podcasting venture faced controversy, with accusations against US star Joe Rogan for spreading misinformation on his shows.
