In our latest update at The Supply Chain Report, we focus on the efforts made in 2022 to safeguard individuals and businesses from various online threats, ranging from common hacking activities to commercial spyware and covert influence operations. We also look ahead to potential challenges in 2023.

A key initiative this year involved integrating various teams and functions within the industry to enhance efficiency and knowledge sharing. This was crucial in combating threats such as advertising fraud, where a compromised personal account of a Facebook Page admin can have broader implications. Efforts spanned across multiple teams, including security engineers, threat intelligence, and integrity teams, all working in concert to fortify defenses against such threats.

Online security remains a constantly evolving challenge, with malicious actors persistently seeking to exploit any vulnerabilities. The industry’s ongoing response involves not only strengthening internal defenses and processes but also fostering collaboration through information-sharing among companies, researchers, and security experts.

Key Areas of Impact in 2022

  • Action Against Covert Influence Operations: Significant progress has been made in enforcing policies against Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior (CIB), with over 200 networks disrupted worldwide since 2017. These networks originated from various countries and targeted audiences both domestically and internationally. The U.S., Ukraine, and the U.K. were among the most targeted countries, with Russia being a prominent source of these operations.
  • Countering the Surveillance-for-Hire Industry: A recent threat report highlights the increasing challenges posed by the global surveillance-for-hire industry. This sector targets a range of individuals, including journalists and political activists, across the globe. Efforts this year led to the takedown of spyware entities in countries like China, Russia, Israel, the U.S., and India. The industry’s broad reach underscores the need for a combined response from governments, industry, and civil society.
  • Strengthening Account Security: Recognizing the importance of account security, research has indicated that keeping contact information updated significantly aids in account recovery. The challenge of lost access to email addresses or changed phone numbers is an industry-wide issue.

Looking Forward to 2023

  • As larger tech platforms become more adept at identifying covert operations, it is anticipated that threat actors may shift their focus to smaller, less-resourced services. Continued collaboration across sectors is essential to expose and counteract these operations.
  • The surveillance-for-hire industry is expected to persist in its widespread targeting. A comprehensive approach involving regulatory responses from democratic governments and ongoing industry action is crucial.
  • The collective defense against these threats will benefit from the insights and recommendations provided in various reports and studies, informing strategies and responses for a broad, society-wide approach.
