Sri Lanka to Utilize Indonesian Fabrics for GSP-Approved Apparel Exports

in Importing & Exporting, Industry

The European Commission (EC) has granted approval for Sri Lanka to incorporate Indonesian fabrics in apparel products eligible for export under the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) scheme. This decision marks a significant development in Sri Lanka’s textile and apparel sector, allowing manufacturers to enhance product diversification and competitiveness within the European market.

Under the GSP scheme, which provides preferential trade terms to developing countries, Sri Lanka can now source fabrics from Indonesia for garment production destined for European Union (EU) markets. This strategic move is expected to bolster Sri Lanka’s export capabilities by leveraging the quality and cost-efficiency of Indonesian textiles.

Commenting on the approval, industry stakeholders expressed optimism regarding the potential benefits for Sri Lanka’s apparel industry. By integrating Indonesian fabrics, manufacturers can expand their sourcing options while meeting stringent quality standards required by EU regulations. This diversification is anticipated to strengthen Sri Lanka’s position as a key player in the global apparel supply chain, fostering sustainable growth and employment opportunities within the sector.

The implementation of Indonesian fabrics in Sri Lankan apparel exports under the GSP scheme underscores both countries’ commitment to enhancing trade relations and promoting economic cooperation. Moving forward, stakeholders are optimistic about the positive impact on export volumes and economic resilience amid evolving global trade dynamics.
