Riyadh Metro’s Red Line to Be Extended to Diriyah, Bolstering Urban Connectivity and Transit Capacity

in Logistics & Transportation

Riyadh’s public transport network is set for a sizeable expansion with the extension of the Red Line of the city’s metro system, a project recently green‑lit by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. The new route will add approximately 8.4 kilometres and five stations to the existing metro line, enhancing connections between the city’s educational hub and the growing Diriyah area.

The planned extension will run from the current terminus near a major university to the Diriyah Gate development, a cultural, tourism and heritage district that has become a key part of the city’s growth strategy. The expansion includes a combination of deep underground tunnels (7.1 km) and elevated track sections (1.3 km), with station placement designed to serve key destinations along the corridor.

Officials highlight that the project will improve urban mobility, reduce reliance on private vehicles and support sustainable transport planning across the capital. Once complete, the extension is expected to ease travel times, provide a reliable alternative to road traffic and accommodate rising ridership as Riyadh continues to expand its metro network.

The development also aligns with broader infrastructure and economic plans, advancing long‑term transit capacity while promoting connectivity between residential, educational and cultural precincts. Completion of the Red Line extension is anticipated within the next six years, reflecting ongoing investments in modernising the region’s transport framework.
