The Republican National Committee (RNC) has stirred controversy by releasing an official video entirely generated using artificial intelligence (AI) images, marking an early adoption of this technology in political campaigns. The video, shared on YouTube, presents a hypothetical future under President Joe Biden’s re-election in 2024. The use of AI in political campaigns is evolving rapidly, with implications for creating realistic-looking videos without extensive technical expertise.

Darrell West, a senior fellow at the Center for Technology Innovation, acknowledged the novelty of AI in election campaigns, noting that the technology’s advancement allows for the creation of compelling and realistic videos. The RNC openly disclosed its use of AI in the video, showcasing the party’s embrace of transformative technology.

The video depicts a fabricated news segment announcing Biden’s victory in 2024, followed by a series of hypothetical disasters, including geopolitical conflicts, economic downturns, and border crises. While such campaign tactics align with traditional strategies of using manipulated images and dystopian scenarios, the use of AI-generated content adds a new layer to political messaging.

West emphasized the uncharted territory of using AI in campaigns, going beyond traditional photo manipulation to create entirely new images. The lack of legal requirements for acknowledging the use of AI-generated content raises concerns about potential misinformation in future campaigns. The technology’s speed and sophistication allow for rapid response ads, with claims and counterclaims evolving minute by minute.

Deepfakes, a form of AI-generated content depicting individuals saying or doing things they never did, have raised concerns, prompting some states like California and Texas to pass laws addressing deepfake-related issues. However, federal efforts to legislate on the matter face challenges, and digital rights groups argue that major tech platforms should play a role in oversight.

The upcoming 2024 presidential polls are expected to be highly competitive, with campaigns targeting specific voter segments. The ability to quickly generate AI content may lead to a fast-paced and potentially confusing campaign environment, making it challenging for voters to distinguish between real and fake information.

As AI continues to play a role in shaping political narratives, the ethical use of technology and the potential impact on voter perception remain subjects of debate.
