Labour Day protests and strikes have dominated France, Italy, and the Netherlands, with workers and labor unions advocating for improved government policies to safeguard their rights and address wage concerns.

France: In France, widespread protests unfolded against President Emmanuel Macron’s unpopular pension reform, which raises the retirement age from 62 to 64 and requires individuals to work 43 years for a full pension. Macron faced criticism during walkabouts, encountering boos, pot banging, and heckles. Nationwide, demonstrations resulted in clashes with the police, vandalism of public property, and vehicle burnings. Unions, respecting the Constitutional Council’s decision on the pension reform, vowed to persist in protests to convince Macron to withdraw the measure. Unions anticipate over a million people to participate in marches on May 1.

Italy: In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confronted labor union demonstrations, urging her government to raise wages and reform the country’s tax policy. Amid protests, the government unveiled a labor package, rolling back anti-poverty subsidies introduced four years ago. Italy’s INPS social security agency cited the cost of the citizens’ revenue, approximately 8 billion euros ($8.8bn) last year, as a concern. Meloni announced a replacement for the “citizens’ income” with a more limited “inclusion cheque” for qualifying households, capped at 500 euros ($550) a month. The government also eased short-term hiring for companies, criticized by unions for keeping employees in precarious economic situations, and promised tax breaks for firms hiring individuals benefiting from the new inclusion cheques.

Netherlands: In the Netherlands, Labour Day protests centered on demands for higher wages. The largest labor union, FNV, proposed a 3 to 7 percent wage increase for its employees this year, followed by a 5 percent increase next year, and automatic price compensation with a maximum of 5 percent from 2025 onward, considering inflation. FNV warned of continued strikes on Tuesday if their demands were not met.
