Prime Ministers Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom and Fumio Kishida of Japan are set to sign the “Hiroshima Accord,” a new agreement aimed at strengthening security ties between the two nations. The accord encompasses various aspects, including the UK’s commitment to deploy an aircraft carrier strike group to the Indo-Pacific in 2025. The agreement, which also addresses trade, investment, science and technology collaboration, and joint initiatives on global issues like climate change, seeks to deepen the partnership between the UK and Japan.

In addition to the deployment of the Carrier Strike Group to the Indo-Pacific in 2025, the accord involves doubling troop numbers for upcoming joint military exercises. Both nations will establish a formal “Consult Clause,” committing to consult each other on crucial regional and global security matters and consider collaborative measures.

This move comes amid increasing tensions in the Asia Pacific region, fueled by North Korea’s advancing weapons program and China’s assertive stance on issues like Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea. The UK and Japan’s collaborative efforts aim to contribute to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Japan and the UK are set to conduct joint military exercises, known as Vigilant Isles, later this year, involving approximately 170 UK personnel. The accord will also foster science and technology programs, supporting collaboration between universities and companies, the development of green technologies, and a Semiconductors Partnership.

The HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, accompanied by the Royal Navy flotilla, made its inaugural voyage to the region in 2021, and in 2025, the fleet is expected to collaborate with the Japanese Self Defence Forces and regional partners to safeguard peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Prime Minister Sunak, on his visit to Tokyo, will engage with key Japanese business leaders, further strengthening ties between the UK and Japan. The agreement reflects the UK’s strategy to deepen relationships beyond Europe following its departure from the European Union.
