DP World Expands Mina Al Hamriya to Bolster Dubai’s Maritime Capabilities

in Logistics & Transportation

DP World has completed a significant expansion of the Mina Al Hamriya port in Dubai, enhancing its capacity and reinforcing the region’s status as a leading global maritime hub. The upgrade includes the addition of 1,150 meters of quay wall and five new berths, which now enable the port to accommodate a wider variety of maritime vessels ranging from traditional dhows to Ro-Ro, bulk, and container carriers.

Initiated in 2022, the expansion project has extended the port’s total quay length to 3,140 meters and increased its berthing capacity to 14 berths. This development is part of a broader strategy by Dubai to bolster its position as a pivotal maritime center influencing trade flows across the Gulf region, East Africa, and India.

The project also included extensive dredging work, which deepened the port’s draft to 8.5 meters to facilitate the docking of larger vessels. Additionally, an 86,000-square-meter apron zone was developed, increasing the total storage capacity of the port to 403,400 square meters. This area is equipped with state-of-the-art maritime technologies to support efficient operations.

In 2023, Mina Al Hamriya played a crucial role in maintaining robust trade links, welcoming over 4,300 ships and handling more than 1.6 million tonnes of cargo. The port serves as a vital import hub for livestock and perishables and supports the local fisheries sector with facilities that accommodate 156 fishing boats.

To further streamline operations and enhance customer service, the port implemented the NAU by DP World system in 2020. This system optimizes the entry process for dhows, allowing for the advance provision of necessary documentation, which facilitates booking requests and shipment processes.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, a representative from DP World, stated, “The successful completion of the Mina Al Hamriya upgrade is a testament to DP World’s dedication to enhancing Dubai’s maritime infrastructure. These enhancements not only enable us to handle a more diverse range of cargo volumes but also reinforce our crucial role in the global and regional trade ecosystems.”
