The Australian government has started a new campaign called ‘Stop. Check. Protect.’ to help people recognize and avoid scams. This effort is designed to inform Australians about current scam techniques and encourages everyone to report scams to Scamwatch. With scammers reaching out through emails, phone calls, and social media, the government wants to remind people to stay alert.
Catriona Lowe, Deputy Chair of the ACCC, highlighted the importance of taking a moment to verify any suspicious messages before responding. The campaign, which will run for 10 weeks beginning on January 12, 2025, will use TV, online platforms, and social media to get the message out. It will also focus on protecting vulnerable groups like older Australians and First Nations peoples.
Lowe pointed out that anyone can fall victim to scams and urged Australians to report any fraudulent activity to Scamwatch to help prevent further financial damage. This campaign is part of a larger effort by the National Anti-Scam Centre to work together with the government, law enforcement, and industry to fight scams effectively.
