Supply Chain Transparency and Green Production Emphasized to Boost Vietnam’s Exports to the UK

by Giezel Garcia

in Supply Chain Transparency

The United Kingdom-Việt Nam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA), in effect since May 1, 2021, has significantly reduced trade barriers, eliminating over 99 percent of tariff lines within six years. This development has provided opportunities for Vietnamese exports such as seafood, textiles, footwear, furniture, and processed agricultural products to increase their presence in the UK market.

Experts have highlighted the importance of transparent supply chains and green production practices to fully leverage the benefits of the agreement. Nguyễn Cảnh Cường, former Trade Counsellor of the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, emphasized the role of sustainability and supply chain transparency in enhancing trade relations.

Trade Trends Post-Brexit

Since the UK’s departure from the European Union, supply chain disruptions and reduced trade with EU partners have created opportunities for Vietnamese exporters. Data shows that bilateral trade between the UK and the EU has declined by up to 30 percent in certain sectors. This shift has allowed Vietnamese businesses to fill gaps in the supply chain, taking advantage of steady or increasing demand in the UK market.

Vietnam’s growing reputation as a trade partner is also contributing to this trend. The country is recognized for its open economy and production capacity, supported by domestic investment and foreign direct investment (FDI). These factors have boosted the confidence of British businesses in Vietnam’s ability to meet market demands.

Addressing Sustainability Challenges

To compete effectively in the UK market, Vietnamese exporters are encouraged to meet sustainability and environmental standards. British businesses prioritize eco-friendly products and require compliance with sustainability policies, such as avoiding plastic packaging and ensuring product traceability through digital tools.

Cường noted that standardization and sustainability are becoming prerequisites for market entry. Businesses are urged to adopt advanced technologies, enhance production systems, and invest in deep processing to optimize their competitiveness.

Supply Chain Transparency Requirements

British importers are increasingly focused on transparency in supply chains. Exporters are expected to provide detailed information about the sourcing of raw materials and production processes. Digital platforms that allow buyers to trace product origins are becoming essential tools for meeting these expectations.

Trade Growth and Key Export Categories

Vietnam’s export turnover to the UK has shown steady growth. In October 2024, exports reached $687.2 million, a 13 percent increase from the previous month. Over the first 10 months of the year, exports totaled nearly $6.4 billion, a 22 percent increase year-on-year.

Key export categories include machinery, equipment, and spare parts, with a turnover of $1.14 billion, representing a 39.7 percent annual increase. Other growing sectors include computers and electronics (up 30.7 percent), steel products (up 34 percent), and transportation means and spare parts (up 35.7 percent).

Vietnamese businesses are advised to focus on sustainable and transparent supply chain practices to maintain and expand their market share in the UK under the UKVFTA framework.
