The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) has announced plans to enhance innovation and transparency in its supply chain operations as part of ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and rebuild public confidence.

Speaking at a strategic meeting in Mombasa, KEMSA Board Chair Samuel Tunai stated that the initiative aims to create a more transparent and effective medical supply system.

“We are committed to ensuring a more transparent and effective medical supply chain. Innovation will be at the heart of our transformation,” Tunai said.

Key areas of focus include improving financial sustainability by strengthening liquidity and cash flow, streamlining supply chain processes to meet customer needs more effectively, and fostering a customer-centric approach that prioritizes service delivery and relationship-building.

KEMSA also plans to integrate technology-driven solutions to enhance decision-making and operational efficiency. The use of data analytics and digital tools is expected to support more informed procurement and distribution strategies. Additionally, investment in talent development and training will equip employees with the necessary skills to navigate the evolving supply chain landscape.

Ensuring regulatory compliance and quality assurance will remain a priority, with a focus on maintaining adherence to established industry standards. The meeting identified short-term, mid-term, and long-term interventions aimed at strengthening procurement practices and optimizing supply chain operations.

KEMSA also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) program, which currently serves 19.5 million Kenyans. “As KEMSA, we have a very critical role to play in ensuring the success of this program. Our priority is to guarantee the availability of medicines across the country,” Tunai added.

KEMSA CEO Dr. Waqo Ejersa noted that the authority’s current order fill rate stands at 56%, with back-order fulfillment raising the figure to 65%. The organization is actively working toward achieving a target of 80-90% to enhance efficiency in the procurement and distribution of essential medical supplies.

A significant challenge facing KEMSA is the issue of outstanding debts owed by counties and other stakeholders. The CEO confirmed that discussions are ongoing with county governments and relevant authorities to facilitate the resolution of these financial obligations.

The strategic reforms are part of KEMSA’s broader efforts to strengthen operational efficiency, improve service delivery, and reinforce public trust in the country’s medical supply chain system.
