The inclusion of Sardinella lemuru, or tamban, in the Codex Alimentarius’ international standards for fish and fishery products is set to expand the Philippines’ fish export market. The Department of Agriculture (DA) reported that this decision, endorsed by the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), will enhance the market reach of Philippine sardine exports, especially in European countries like Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain. The move follows years of advocacy and technical discussions led by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel emphasized the potential for new investments and job creation in the local fishery industry as a result of this development. Tamban’s inclusion was long-awaited, especially after the Philippines faced export challenges when European markets rejected canned tamban in the past due to its lack of Codex certification. The DA now expects the inclusion to ensure sustainable growth for local fishermen and contribute to global sustainability goals.
