Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is scheduled to hold discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding Tesla’s plans to establish a manufacturing base in India. This significant meeting, the first of its kind at a high level, will take place during Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to the United States. The information comes from a reliable source who chose to remain anonymous due to the private nature of the discussions.

In recent weeks, executives from Tesla visited India and engaged in talks with Indian government officials and ministers. These discussions encompassed the establishment of a manufacturing base for Tesla vehicles and the production of batteries within India. During the meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Elon Musk will delve into the details of Tesla’s investment plans and its outlook for India’s economic potential. The source describes this meeting as a “high-level discussion” regarding India’s economic prospects.

It is evident that Tesla holds strong intentions for India, with a particular interest in manufacturing within the country. Tesla has yet to respond to inquiries from Reuters, and the Indian government spokesperson did not provide a response during non-business hours.

Elon Musk had previously mentioned that Tesla would likely select a location for a new factory by the end of this year, indicating India as a compelling choice. Many US companies, including Tesla and Apple, are exploring options to reduce their reliance on China as a manufacturing hub, given the ongoing tensions between the United States and China.

While Tesla had temporarily shelved its plans to enter the Indian market due to high import tax structures, recent weeks have witnessed renewed discussions between Tesla and Indian officials regarding the establishment of a manufacturing base, a prospect that India has long been eager to realize.

This meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Elon Musk gains added significance due to its timing, coming shortly after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey accused India of threatening to shut down the platform during the 2020-2021 protests due to non-compliance with content takedown orders. India vehemently denied these allegations. Elon Musk, who owns X (Twitter), has not publicly commented on this incident, which created a political stir in India.

At a recent event, Musk emphasized his support for free speech, advocating for its preservation within the bounds of each country’s laws.
