Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell addressed the ongoing uncertainty about the necessity of additional interest rate increases in the United States. Speaking at a Fed research conference, Powell emphasized that it remains unclear whether interest rates will need to rise further, given the challenge of assessing the impact of past rate hikes and recent credit tightening by banks against the backdrop of persistent inflation.

Powell’s remarks, delivered during a panel session in Washington, highlighted the Federal Reserve’s commitment to making decisions “meeting by meeting.” He acknowledged the need to carefully assess the lagged effects of previous tightening measures and the impact of recent banking stresses on credit tightening. Powell emphasized that the guidance provided is limited to identifying factors the central bank will monitor to determine if additional policy firming is necessary to achieve the 2 percent inflation target.

The Fed Chair stated, “The risks of doing too much or doing too little are becoming more balanced, and our policy adjusted to reflect that.” Powell stressed that, ahead of the June 13-14 policy meeting, no decisions have been made regarding the extent of additional policy firming.

Powell mentioned that data so far supports the committee’s view that bringing down inflation will take time. He cited factors like the tight labor market, particularly in service industries, contributing to persistent inflation. The Federal Reserve will consider upcoming jobs and inflation data before reaching a decision during the Federal Open Market Committee’s policy review.

The recent quarter-of-a-percentage-point rate increase, the tenth since March 2022, raised the benchmark policy rate to the 5 percent to 5.25 percent range. Powell noted that the Fed’s policy statement left the door open to a potential pause, but further decisions would depend on accumulating data.

As the Federal Reserve navigates uncertainty, policymakers are divided in their views, with some advocating for a pause in rate hikes, while others support further increases. Powell’s remarks reflected a cautious approach, emphasizing the need for ongoing assessment based on evolving economic conditions.
